In May 2024 Forest of Dean District Council produced a Market Towns Regeneration Report. The report offered recommendations on how each of the Forest towns might build on its strengths to enable community led regeneration.

In Newent people wanted to dig into what regeneration might look like for our town in a little more detail.

A series of two visioning workshops were arranged and led by Deborah Richardson, chair of Newent Business Club. the group consisted of 12 Newent residents, councillors, community activists and business owners. The group were all volunteers – self selected. The conclusions drawn should be viewed as qualitative and taken as a basis for discussion.

Newent Is:

A friendly Community. Proud of our 1,000 years of History, our Independent Businesses and beautiful Green Spaces.

Small and perfectly formed our market town sits within rich farmland, in the famous Daffodil Triangle, at the foot of May Hill.

We aim for Newent to be a community where everyone can enjoy the present, embrace the future and cherish the past, respecting one another, our town and countryside.

The future builds on our long history and is only just getting started.

By working together Newent will become a place where people want to live, work and play. A place where everyone feels welcome and there is always something to do.

How Will We Get There?

We’ll get there by working together to celebrate, nurture and promote:

  • Our independent businesses and entrepreneurs.
  • Our amazing history and heritage buildings.
  • Our unique music, art and culture.
  • Our special green spaces.
  • Our sports, well-being and active life-styles.
  • Our fabulous farmland and and delicious local produce.

These workshops, alsong the the Market Towns Regeneration Report, highlight the vital role the arts and nature have to play in building a vibrant, inclusive community. These are the guiding principles of Create Newent.
